One of the main reasons we love watches so much is their connection to – and sometimes direct impact on – historic events. In this YouTube video series, we take deep dives into specific decades in watchmaking history.
In the 1950s, the world was still grappling with the aftermath of World War II. It was a time of rapid economic growth, the escalation of the Cold War, and the early civil rights movement. Although wounds from the war were still fresh, the accompanying economic boom across large segments of society led to a drive for progress and self-realization. These motivations were reflected in fashion, among other sectors. Up to that point, watches tended to have elegant cases made of gold and mounted on leather straps. In a sense, every watch was a “dress watch,“ but the 1950s changed it all. Thanks to technical innovations – such as the possibility of transatlantic travel – and a newfound desire for exploration and adventure, sports and diving watches grew in popularity. Thus, we’ll be taking a closer look at the Omega Seamaster, Rolex Explorer, and other 1950s timepieces that continue to fascinate watch enthusiasts to this day. Let us know your favorite icon of the 1950s in the comments below the video.
