10 Signs That You’re Officially a Watch Nerd

If you’re interested in watches, it can be tons of fun discussing your favorite brands, models, and movements. But let’s be honest, while the world of watches is magical, it takes time to get to know all the ins and outs of the industry. However, once you finally get fully sucked into the world of watches, it’s only a matter of time before you start showing signs of watch nerddom.

Don’t get me wrong: There’s nothing wrong with being a watch nerd! That is, as long as you aren’t in denial. So, how can you tell if you are a true watch nerd? We have made a list of 10 signs that might give it away. Remember, there’s no need to be afraid of your nerdiness – celebrate it with pride!

1.You can’t remember the name of the person you met, but you know which watch they were wearing

This is a very common occurrence among watch enthusiasts. The moment you shake a person’s hand, you check out the watch on their wrist. A side effect of this is that you totally miss the person’s name if you’re meeting for the first time – the horror! Well, if the watch is any good, you can at least start up a conversation about the watch.

2. You don’t refer to watches by their names, but by their reference numbers

Only true watch nerds understand the secret language of reference numbers. Most laypeople don’t have a clue what a 1016, 5711/1A, 5402, or 3227 are. If you happen to know these four reference numbers by heart, then congratulations, you are officially a watch nerd.

3. The first thing you do when you get out of bed is put a watch on your wrist

Most people get out of bed in the morning and head directly for the shower or to make a cup of coffee, but watch nerds are wired differently. The first thing they do is put a watch around their wrist. There was probably some thought about the watch choice the night before. If so, that’s pretty nerdy.

4. You wear your diving watch in the shower or bathtub

If you have a diving watch, why not put it to the test, right? It’s not every day you go diving, so the best way to test whether your diver with a supposed water-resistance of 656 ft (300 m) is still up to snuff is to wear it in the shower. Don’t worry, we won’t tell anyone.

5. You try and convince everyone what the best watch is based on facts and figures

Watch nerds love nothing more than discussing watches. While stories and emotions are nice, what they really want to talk about is the facts and figures. Emerging from a discussion triumphant comes down to accuracy, material, movement, power reserve, and price. For true watch nerds, the best watch is neither a personal nor subjective matter.

6. You bore your friends and family with watch stories

One key character trait of a watch nerd is that they like to talk about watches as often as possible with whomever will listen. Everyone loves a good watch, right? A family reunion for example is once again time to tell your parents, brothers, sisters, and the rest of your family all about your favorite watches. If they nod off for a second, your nerddom has proven its powers – even it if wasn’t for the good.

7. You connect every historic event to a watch

Has this ever happened to you? If someone says John F. Kennedy, your first thought is the “gold tank-style Omega Ultra Thin he wore during his inauguration.” Or if someone mentions Dr. No, you immediately think about the Rolex Submariner ref. 6538 on Sean Connery’s wrist. It’s pretty clear that you have become a watch nerd when your first thought is a watch reference.

8. You use your chronograph to keep the time when cooking

You can keep time in the kitchen with a number of devices, such as an egg timer or the timer integrated into your stove or oven. But what’s more fun than timing a boiling egg with your beautiful chronograph? That’s what it is made for, right? Maybe not, but it sure comes in handy!

9. You match your outfit to your watch strap

If you match the color of your watch to your outfit, that just makes you a style-conscious person. However, if you are matching your outfit specifically to the strap colors of the watch on your wrist, it says something about the importance of watches in your life. You have reached nerd levels of watch enthusiasm.

10. You do not see the humor in the previous 9 signs of nerdiness

Watch nerds take their stuff seriously – very seriously. So, if you have read all the previous signs of watch nerddom and can recognize them in yourself, congratulations, you have reached the ultimate status of watch nerd.
